How to book the theory test for a category B licence

What you need before you book, how booking works with Trafikverket, what the test costs and how long a passed test is valid.

You book the theory test yourself with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). Trafikverket calls it the knowledge test (kunskapsprov). Here is what you need to know.

Before you book

  • You must have a valid learner's permit (körkortstillstånd) from the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen).
  • You must have done the risk awareness course (riskutbildning) before you take the tests. This means both part 1 (alcohol, drugs, tiredness) and part 2 (the skid pan). Check the current requirements with Trafikverket.
  • On test day you must be able to prove who you are with a valid ID document.

How to book

You book on Trafikverket's website with an e-ID, or through your driving school. You choose the town, the day and the time. Many people book the theory test and the driving test close together, so that the theory is fresh.

The test in other languages

The theory test for a category B licence is available in 15 languages, including English, Arabic, Persian, Somali and Turkish. You choose the language when you book. During the test you can switch to Swedish. If you cannot read Swedish, you can apply to take the test with an interpreter.

What does it cost?

According to the ordinance on test fees, the theory test costs SEK 420 on weekdays between 07.30 and 18.00, and SEK 520 in the evenings and at weekends. The driving test costs more. Fees can change, so always check on Trafikverket's website before you pay.

How long is a passed theory test valid?

From 19 August 2026, a passed theory test is valid for one year. Within that time you must pass the driving test. Tests passed before that date are valid for four months.

If you do not pass

You can take the test again. Book a new time and use the time before it to practise the topics you found hard. You can see which topics they are in your statistics.
