Swedish citizenship test
Practise for the Swedish citizenship test
A new test for people applying for Swedish citizenship. Here you learn what the test contains and practise with questions in the same format.
The test is in Swedish. This page is translated so that you understand what is required; the practice questions always show the Swedish original alongside.
What is the citizenship test?
The citizenship test is a knowledge test for people applying for Swedish citizenship. It shows that you have basic knowledge of Swedish society. The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) is responsible for the test. The Swedish Migration Agency decides who has to take it.
Since 6 June 2026 there is a knowledge requirement for citizenship. The first test, in civics, was held in August 2026. A test in the Swedish language will be introduced later. You only need to take the test if you cannot show your knowledge another way, for example with a passing grade in civics (samhällskunskap) from year 9, upper secondary school or adult education (komvux).
How the test works
- The questions are multiple choice with four options. One option is correct.
- The test is in Swedish and written on paper.
- You must bring your printed summons and valid Swedish ID.
- Mobile phones, smartwatches and other electronics are not allowed.
What the questions are about
The questions are based on UHR's study material Sverige i fokus, which has 14 chapters: the country of Sweden, democracy, how Sweden is governed, elections and parties, law and justice, the media, human rights, the labour market and the economy, welfare, modern history, Sweden and the world, religion, and traditions and holidays. Our practice questions cover the same areas but are written by us, in our own words and with a source for every question.
