How to study for the citizenship test

A simple five-step plan: read the material, practise one topic at a time, take practice tests, review your mistakes and rest before test day.

The test is in Swedish. So it helps to study in Swedish, even if it feels hard at first. Here is a plan that works for most people.

1. Read or listen to Sverige i fokus

UHR's material is the foundation. Read one chapter at a time. If reading is hard: listen to the audio file and follow the text at the same time. Write down words you do not understand and look them up.

2. Practise one topic at a time

Go to practice mode and choose the same topic as the chapter you just read. You get one question at a time and an explanation after every answer. Read the explanation even when you answer correctly. Use "Show in Swedish" to see the original wording.

3. Take a practice test

Once you have gone through all topics: take a practice test. You see the result only at the end, just like in the real test. Look at which topics were hardest.

4. Review your mistakes

In statistics you see which questions you got wrong. The Review mistakes button gives you only those questions. Repeat until you get them right.

5. Rest before the test

The day before the test: study a little, not a lot. Sleep well. Eat breakfast. Pack your summons and ID the evening before.

If Swedish is the hard part

  • Read the questions aloud. It makes them easier to understand.
  • Learn the words that keep coming back: riksdag (parliament), regering (government), kommun (municipality), rättighet (right), skyldighet (obligation), myndighet (authority).
  • SFI and komvux offer free Swedish courses. Ask your municipality.
