Who has to take the Swedish citizenship test?

The test applies to you if you apply for Swedish citizenship and are 16–66, unless you can show your knowledge another way. Here are the rules in brief.

Since 6 June 2026, new rules apply for Swedish citizenship. One of them is a knowledge requirement. You must show that you have basic knowledge of Swedish and of Swedish society.

The knowledge requirement applies to you if you are 16–66

The requirement applies when you apply for citizenship and are between 16 and 66 years old. It has two parts:

  • The Swedish language. You must be able to read and listen at level B1, and speak and write at level A2.
  • Swedish society. You must have basic knowledge of how Sweden works.

You can show your knowledge in different ways

You do not always have to take a test. The Migration Agency accepts, for example:

  • A passing grade in civics (samhällskunskap) from year 9, upper secondary school (gymnasiet) or adult education (komvux).
  • A passing grade in Swedish or Swedish as a second language from year 9, upper secondary school, komvux or the highest course in SFI.
  • A passing result on the Tisus test for Swedish.

If you cannot show your knowledge in one of those ways, you may have to take the citizenship test in civics. That is the test you can practise for here.

Who is exempt?

Some groups do not need to meet the knowledge requirement, for example:

  • Stateless people born in Sweden who are under 21.
  • Nordic citizens who make a notification (anmälan) instead of an application.
  • People with a disability or other special reasons.

How it works

  1. You apply for citizenship with the Migration Agency.
  2. The Migration Agency assesses whether you need to take the test. If so, you receive a letter.
  3. Only after you have received the letter can you register for the test with UHR.
  4. UHR sends the result to the Migration Agency.
