How to register for the citizenship test
You can only register after a letter from the Migration Agency. Here are the steps, what you need and what has not yet been decided.
You register for the citizenship test with UHR, the Swedish Council for Higher Education. But you cannot register at any time.
Step 1: Wait for the letter from the Migration Agency
The Migration Agency decides who has to take the test. If you need to take it, you receive a letter. Without the letter you cannot register.
Step 2: Register with UHR when registration is open
UHR opens registration before each test session. Right now (October 2026) registration is closed. UHR plans the next test for April to May 2027. Place and date have not been published yet.
Step 3: Pay the registration fee
UHR has not yet published the fee. We will update this guide when the fee is known.
What you need on test day
- Your summons (kallelse), printed on paper. Without it you will not be let in.
- Valid Swedish ID: a Swedish ID card, a Swedish driving licence or a SIS-marked ID card. A foreign passport is not accepted, and electronic ID cannot be used.
Read more in the guide Test day: how it works.
Do you need adjustments?
If you have a disability, you can apply for adjustments to the test, for example extra time. Contact UHR well before the test.
