How the theory test works
70 questions in 50 minutes on a touchscreen computer. What the questions look like, how marking works and what you may bring.
The format
- 70 questions with answer options. One option is correct.
- 5 of the questions are trial questions that the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) is evaluating. They do not count, and you do not know which ones they are.
- So you can get at most 65 points. With 52 points or more you pass.
- The test time is 50 minutes.
Our mock test uses the same numbers.
At the test centre
You take the test on a computer with a touchscreen. You can use the stylus that is provided. There are headphones, and you can choose to listen to the questions in Swedish. The test is also available in several other languages, and you can apply for an interpreter.
You must show valid ID. You may not use a mobile phone or any other aids.
Types of question
Many questions have a picture: a traffic situation or a road sign. The question may be about what you should do, what rule applies or why. Other questions are pure fact questions about rules, the vehicle, the driver or the environment.
Tips during the test
- Answer the questions you know first. Mark the ones you are unsure of and go back to them.
- Keep an eye on the time: 50 minutes for 70 questions is just under 45 seconds per question.
- Answer every question. A blank answer is always wrong.
The result
You get your result straight after the test. Trafikverket reports it to the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen).
How long is a passed test valid?
A passed theory test is valid for one year from the day of the test. So you must take the driving test within that year.
The new rule applies from 19 August 2026. If you took the test before that date, the old rule applies. Under the old rule a passed test was valid for four months. Check your date with Trafikverket.
